ADOPTION PROCESS.
MAKING SECOND CHANCES POSSIBLE.
Bringing a new pet into your life is a big decision, and when you adopt, you're giving a loving pet the second chance it deserves — and freeing up shelter resources to help other pets in need. The Animal Protection League is here for animals that have nowhere else to go. They arrive here for a variety of reasons, but they're all looking for the same things: love, security and a family of their own. Adoption is an act of love — and that's where you come in.
ADOPTION PROCESS
MAKING LIFELONG CONNECTIONS
-
Why should I adopt from The Animal Protection League? If your pet hasn’t already been spayed or neutered, your adoption fee includes it! Your pet will be spayed/neutered before they go home. All animals receive a complimentary wellness exam and a certificate for a free Rabies vaccine (redeemable with any participating veterinarian). Each animal receives 30 days of free pet insurance. All animals will have received - at minimum - their first round of vaccinations, complete deworming, and flea/tick treatment, if needed. All dogs meeting the age requirement (6 months old) will have been heartworm tested. All cats are Feline Leukemia and FIV tested. Each pet is microchipped and registered to the adopter for FREE.
-
How old do I have to be to adopt? The minimum age for adoption is 21.
-
Do I have to be a homeowner to adopt? We must be able to either verify homeownership or have approval from from your landlord. Regardless of age, if you live with a parent or other family member, he or she must be present at the time of adoption.
-
What identification will I need, if I want to adopt?"We require you to have a personal phone number and driver's license or state ID.
-
What if I already have a pet at home?If you currently have a dog, we require that they be introduced to your new addition. We'll schedule a meet & greet and help with introductions. If you currently have a cat, and would like to adopt a dog, we'll conduct a complimentary "cat test" to ensure feline-canine compatibility.
-
What if I have young kids?We require that all family/household members be introduced to new pets, before an adoption is finalized. This requirement may be waived for some cat adoptions.
-
May I give a pet as a gift?Because choosing a pet is a very personal - and lifelong - decision, we do not allow pets to be adopted as gifts.
-
Do my current pets need to be spayed/neutered before I can adopt?Approximately 3 million animals are euthanized in U.S. shelters every year. In an effort to do our part to reduce that number, we require that other animals within an adopter's home be spayed or neutered. To learn more about the health and behavior improvement benefits of spaying/neutering your pet and low-cost vet resources visit this page. Some exceptions may be made under the following circumstances: You provide documentation from your vet explaining why spaying/neutering is not in your pet's best health interest. Your pet is under six months old. You can provide proof of a Breeder's permit and have documentation that your pet is a "show" animal.
The wife and I have a puppy and she played very well with our daughter's cats, so we thought it would complete our family to get a cat. Sadly, we're not cat people - so, what do we do? We adopt TWO! The staff at APL are great. Good selection. They don't turn animals away. This place is great and the people are too.

This is a special place with many wonderful people, volunteers, and loving pets looking for a Forever Home. If you're looking for a new baby to love, this is the place to go. We drove over 2 hours to get there. Well worth it.

ADOPTION POLICIES.
Our animals change daily, so please check our lists of adoptable dogs and adoptable cats frequently. Once you find an animal you’d like to adopt, the next step is to complete an application. Make sure to be thorough and help us understand why you’re interested in that particular animal — and why your home is a great fit.
If we have multiple applicants for the same animal, our team will review the applications and select the home we feel is the best fit. If there’s more than one great fit for the animal, we will go with the applicant who submitted an application and confirms a meet and greet appointment first.
